Long ago, large-capacity Hironari iron kettles, such as 2- or 3-sho models, were commonly suspended over open hearths to provide households with their daily water. Thanks to the wing-like shape of the flared base, the rim would not become hot even when placed over a fire, allowing it to be held with bare hands. Although these iron kettles were widely used as gifts and produced in abundance, they gradually disappeared as lifestyles changed. The 16th-generation Morishige has revived the kettle in a convenient 1.7-liter size as a tribute to his predecessors. The design features auspicious motifs inspired by the saying, "A crane lives a thousand years, a turtle ten thousand."
