In the old days, many large Hahiro iron kettles, 2 or 3 sho capacity models, were hung above the hearth to provide water for household use. The wide wings at the base of the Hahiro shape meant that the handle did not heat up even when hung over a flame, and could be held with bare hands. Iron kettles were widely used as gifts and were made in great numbers, but they disappeared as lifestyles changed. The 16th generation, Morihisa, revived them in an easy-to-use 1.7 liter size as a sign of respect for his predecessors. The motif is a lively auspicious pattern, as in "cranes live for a thousand years, turtles live for ten thousand years."
